In Progress: The Beauty of Unfinished Works

Submission Guidelines

Arts Davidson County invites artists to submit their works for our first exhibition of the New Year, "In Progress...The Beauty of Unfinished Works." This show celebrates the beauty of the creative process and the potential in unfinished work. Please read the guidelines carefully before submitting.

Submission Requirements
  1. Eligibility:

    • Open to all artists, all mediums welcome (painting, drawing, sculpture, mixed media, photography, etc.).

  2. Artwork Criteria:

    • Artwork must be incomplete or deliberately left in-progress.

    • Pieces should demonstrate the creative process, such as visible sketches, under-paintings, or partially finished areas.

    • Artists are encouraged to submit works that represent different stages of the creative process. For example, you might submit a rough sketch, a partially developed piece, and a work nearing completion. This helps tell a story of growth and transformation.

  3. Presentation Guidelines:

    • Artwork does not need to be framed but must be ready to hang or display.

    • Acceptable methods include:

      • Mounted on foam core, board, or other sturdy backing.

      • Presented with hanging hardware such as D-rings, sawtooth hangers, or wires securely attached.

      • 3D works must be stable and self-supporting or include a display stand.

    • Works not meeting display requirements may not be accepted.

  4. Size Limitations:

    • 2D works: Maximum dimensions of 36” x 48” including any mounting.

    • 3D works: Maximum dimensions of 24” x 24” x 24” and maximum weight of 50 lbs.

  5. Artist Statement:

    • Include a brief statement (50–100 words) describing why the piece is unfinished and what it represents. If submitting multiple stages, briefly explain the progression.

Submission Process
  1. How to Submit:

    • Email high-resolution images of your work to amanda@artsdavidsoncounty.org.

    • Include the following in your submission:

      • Title, medium, and dimensions for each piece.

      • Artist statement for each submitted work.

      • Contact information (name, phone, and email).

  2. Number of Submissions:

    • Artists may submit up to 5 pieces for consideration.

  3. Deadline:

    • Submissions must be received by Friday, January 3, 2025.

Exhibition Details
  • Opening Reception: Thursday, January 9, 2025 6 PM – 8 PM at Arts | Theatre 202.

  • Exhibit Duration: Friday, January 10 – Saturday, February 28.

  • Drop-Off Dates: Accepted works must be delivered to Arts | Theatre 202 by Tuesday, January 7, 2025

  • Pick-Up Dates: Unsold works must be picked up by Thursday, March 6, 2025.

Interactive Opportunities

Visitors to the exhibition will have the unique opportunity to engage directly with artists. Guests are encouraged to share their thoughts on the displayed works and even offer suggestions on how the pieces might be completed. This interactive element invites collaboration and celebrates the evolving nature of creativity.

Additional Information
  • Sales: Works may be for sale. Arts Davidson County will retain a commission of 25% members 30% nonmembers on all sold pieces.

  • Liability: While we take the utmost care, Arts Davidson County is not responsible for damage to artwork during transport or exhibition.

  • Gallery Hours:

    • The gallery doors will be open on Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays from 11 AM to 3 PM, offering ample opportunities for visitors to explore the captivating artworks.

    • Additionally, the gallery is open by appointment, providing flexibility for those with different schedules or specific preferences.

  • Volunteer Opportunities:

    • We encourage our Arts Davidson County community members to consider volunteering in our gallery during the exhibition. Your involvement will contribute to the smooth operation of the event, ensuring a welcoming and engaging experience for visitors.

      • Direct Engagement:  Volunteering allows artists to engage directly with visitors, sharing insights into their creative process and establishing a personal connection with the audience.

      • Increased Visibility:  Active participation reinforces an artist's visibility within the local arts community, potentially leading to greater recognition and support for their work.

      • Networking Opportunities:  Volunteering provides valuable networking opportunities, enabling artists to connect with fellow creatives, art enthusiasts, and potential collaborators.

      • Gallery Representation:  Being present in the gallery positions the artist as a representative of the exhibition, strengthening their relationship with the gallery and enhancing future opportunities for showcasing their art.

      • Community Building: Volunteering contributes to the sense of community within the arts organization, fostering connections with other artists, gallery staff, and visitors. This sense of community support can positively impact an artist's career and overall artistic experience.
